Acne Treatment | Cosmos Clinic Adelaide
Acne is a common problem for teenagers, but can affect people of all ages. Without an effective acne treatment, active acne can impact on confidence, personal development and self-esteem.
Acne Treatment with Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
By reducing the amount of oil glands in the skin, Photodynamic Therapy is the only acne treatment which has been shown to have long-term benefits. Popular acne treatments such as Vitamin A cream, benzyl peroxide wash or antibiotics only have a 50% success rate. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) used at Cosmos Clinic has an 80-90% success rate (*Results can vary from patient to patient).
Roaccutane does have a similar to PDT, however the side effects of taking this drug are daunting to many, and may even mean that some people may be refused access to the Roaccutane drug.
*Results may vary from patient to patient
What is Photodynamic Therapy?
If you have acne, you may notice that if you are out in the sun during summer, your skin tends to improve. This is due to the activation of a substance known as ALA. ALA is in your oil glands and when activated, can destruct the blocked oil gland and the bacteria that causes acne. Photodynamic therapy intensifies this process by increasing the amount of ALA in your skin and then activating the ALA process with simulated UV free sunlight, known as Omnilux.
How does it work?
Firstly a cream called Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA) is applied to your skin. This ALA is then activated by a light source. This is the Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) Process. PDT can be used on any area of the body, including your back, chest and arms.
When this light activates the ALA cream, a few processes take place, which include:
- The destruction of sebaceous glands. Which when blocked are responsible for causing acne.
- The destruction of Propionibacterium Acnes. This is the bacteria that triggers acne.
- Improvement of the texture, tone and complexion of the skin.
- Reduced pore size, and pigmentation.
- Reduction in redness with every treatment.
What will happen when you come in for your Acne Treatment?
At Cosmos Clinic laser clinic in Adelaide, we will firstly remove any surface layers of dead skin. This is done through a microdermabrasion and acetone treatment. The ALA cream is then applied and left on for 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the desired effect. Finally you will lie under a light source for 20 minutes, in which you may experience a mild tingling sensation.
After your Acne Treatment
After your procedure, it is very important that you avoid the sun, using sunscreen is advised. Exposing your skin to the sun will result in a burning sensation, which will come on quicker than a usual sunburn. This sensitivity to the sun and some redness of your skin may last from two days to two weeks, depending on the intensity of the treatment (*Can vary from patient to patient).
When will you see results?
You will see dramatic improvements in your skin within the first two weeks, these results will continue to improve over the following six to eight weeks (*Results can vary from patient to patient)
*Results may vary from patient to patient
How long will the results last?
The results will last for up to two years, although can vary from patient to patient. If you are in your teens, this two years will be enough to get you through common teenage acne period, which means when your PDT treatment results wear off, your acne may not ever reoccur.
How many PDT Acne Treatments will you need?
At Cosmos Clinic we advise two to four treatments, at two to four week intervals. This will achieve the best result. After one treatment, 30% of patients see an improvement, 60% will improve after two treatments, while 90% will improve after three treatments (*Results may vary from patient to patient).
